How to fix frozen pipes

As the holidays near, and the snow and cold settle in, its time to think about winterizing your home to avoid frozen pipes.

Preventing Freezing Pipes

Take a look around your home. Do you have sinks on outside walls? If so, pay special attention to the pipes that connect to these locations. How cold does it get under the sink? Leave the door to the sink open or cracked so heat can circulate. If you’re going to be out of town for a while, don’t turn the heat off. Instead, turn it down and leave the door open wide to keep it warm. Even the most insulated homes can still freeze without heat.

You may also wish to insulate the pipes for added protection. Minor maintenance now can prevent a costly problem down the road.

Leaking Pipes

Do a quick search throughout your home for leaky pipes. If you have a basement or crawl space, make sure you check for puddles or wet spots. Pipes usually leak before they burst. If you find any wetness, fix the pipe before it turns into a more serious problem.

Freezing or Bursting Pipes

If you do have a pipe burst due to freezing, turn off the water supply and call your local plumber immediately. Remove as many items as you can from the surrounding area to give the plumber as much room as possible. Wait for the plumber to assess the damage, and fix the problem.
