8 Common AC Problems and How To Repair Them

It’s hard to imagine surviving these 90 and 100 degree days without the use of air conditioning. But like any home appliance, they eventually wear out. How do you know if your AC unit needs repair? Where do you start? Here’s a guide of the most common AC problems and where to begin.

Filter

Just like your furnace, an air conditioner runs better with a clean air filter. If it’s clogged or dirty, it won’t filter air through the system as effectively, making the equipment work harder to get the job done. Check with your AC unit’s manufacturer for guidelines on how frequently to change out the filter, but at a minimum do so at the start of each season.

Thermostat

We’re often called out for AC repair, and the problem lies with the thermostat not being set correctly. Be sure the thermostat is turned to cooling, is cleaned, and level. Also, monitor it throughout the day; is it being impacted by sunlight? That can make your air conditioner operate more than it should as it thinks it’s hotter than it really is.

Refrigerant

An air conditioner operates with refrigerant in the system. If coolant is leaking into the system, the unit will no longer perform correctly, and you’ll have a home that doesn’t cool the way you desire. This can be prevented by having a yearly tune-up where a professional evaluates the system to make sure everything is operating correctly.

Drainage

An AC unit produces moisture. This moisture needs proper drainage to move away from the system. If the drainage line becomes clogged with dirt, it can backup and cause damage to the AC unit itself.

Coils

An air conditioner has evaporator and condenser coils. If either become dirty or corroded, the air conditioner won’t work properly. These should be checked every year by a professional to ensure they are in good operating condition to help you stay cool the entire summer season.

Compressor

The compressor gives an air conditioner power to cool. It sends energy to the refrigerant, moves it over the coils, and out of the heat exchange. If the compressor isn’t working, the functionality of the air conditioner grinds to a halt.

Fuses

Breakers and fuses allow the air conditioner to operate, safeguarding the motor and compressor from damage. Breakers and fuses are always checked during routine maintenance visits, to help increase the lifespan of your equipment.

Capacitor

Start capacitors jolt the system and activate the motor while run capacitors ensure that the motor stays running once it’s in operation. Without the capacitors, the AC unit won’t continue to cycle and keep your home cool.

Do you have problems keeping your air conditioner running? Every home experiences common AC repair problems from time to time. The best way to combat them is to start with a seasonal maintenance visit from your local professional HVAC company. And at the first sign of trouble, take action rather than wait.

With this in mind, you’ll stay cool all summer long.
