The Sounds Your HVAC System Makes

It doesn’t matter how old or new your HVAC system is, if it’s not properly maintained, it’s at risk of operational problems. Your HVAC system rarely shuts down without a little warning. And those warning signals usually come in the form of a noise.

Have you heard any of these sounds coming from your HVAC system lately?

Banging

If a part is broken, it will bang around inside the system every time the furnace or air conditioner turns on. Unfortunately, the banging sound most often comes from the compressor or blower unit, possible a fan blade that is bent or broken and hitting against another object. A loose motor mount may also be the problem. The longer this goes on, the more damage it creates.

Rattling

When bolts come loose, or parts are no longer as tightened down as they were after prediction, they tend to rattle a bit every time airflow begins. This might not be as bad as the banging sound, but it is an indication that something is wrong.

Screeching

You can’t ignore the metal on metal sound. It’s very distinct. This sound starts when the motor bearings start wearing down, the fan belt begins to wear, or the blower unit lacks lubricant and is in need of repair.

Hissing

When you turn on your air conditioner and it’s accompanied by a hissing noise, there’s a good chance it means you have a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks are both a problem to your HVAC equipment and to your air supply.

Clicking

You’ll often hear a clicking noise as the system turns on and off. But if you hear a continual clicking noise throughout the process, it could be a sign of an electrical problem. The best place to start looking is with the thermostat; it might not be sending the correct signals to your HVAC system.
