With temperatures climbing well into the eighties this spring, you may be using your air conditioner more than your furnace these days. As a homeowner, that might have you wondering how efficient your air conditioner really is. If you’ve noticed your utility bills rise higher in the summer, efficiency may be something you’re striving for this year.
But what does that look like? How can you determine how efficient your cooling equipment is? Your central air conditioner requires a few things to properly function all season long. A simple test will tell you just how efficient it is.
Test your air conditioner for efficiency
There’s an easy way to determine if your air conditioner is operating efficiently. You can do so with a simple five-minute test.
On the next hot day, turn your air conditioner on. Place a thermometer at a supply register for at least five minutes. Once you have an accurate reading, repeat the process at the return register.
If your air conditioner is working correctly, the supply of cold air being pushed into your home should be at least 15 degrees cooler than the air returning back into the system. Anything less will be an indicator of a problem within the system.
Your air conditioner isn’t as efficient as it should be. What can you do?
Step one
Your first step is to check all vents throughout your home. Are they all working properly? Ensure they are open and supply cold air to each room. Also look for vents that are blocked by boxes, furnishings, or drapery. A system can’t work properly if any part of the system is blocked.
Step two
Change out your air filter. If you can’t remember the last time you changed it, make today the day. This is the one thing that can significantly change your home’s air quality. Most manufacturers suggest changing it seasonally. In a busy household, monthly is recommended. This is an easy way to keep your entire HVAC system working well all year long.
These two simple steps may solve your efficiency problem. Test again to see if your air conditioner is working again and cooling down your home.
If not, further investigation might be necessary to determine where your problem lies.
