What is a Furnace Tune-Up?

Tune-up. If you look it up in the dictionary, “tune-up” means:

• An act of tuning something up
• To adjust an engine or mechanism so that it performs at maximum efficiency

A furnace tune-up gets to the heart of your heating system, checking it for potential problems so it can be repaired before the issues escalate in size. 

A furnace tune-up gives a professional HVAC technician a chance to look at all of the working parts of the furnace, and adjust minor issues early. It’s usually performed before the start of the season to ensure it’s working well. 

Tune-ups are not always the same. A technician will consider the age and condition of the furnace before they begin. A ten-year-old system won’t act the same way as a new one. Yet they each should still perform to their greatest efficiency, and be in their best condition. 

Some of the furnace tune-up tasks we complete include:

• Inspect the thermostat, checking the cycle rate
• Inspect the air filter, changing it off if necessary
• Inspect the exhaust vent and intake air piping
• Test primary and secondary voltage and breakers
• Inspect and test the on/off power switch
• Cycle the furnace controllers
• Clean and lubricate the indoor blower motor assembly
• Clean, inspect, and test the combustion motor
• Check, inspect, and adjust gas pressure
• Perform a combustion analysis
